Kew Gardens Wedding Cake

Having a wedding in Kew Gardens is certainly a brave choice for a wedding venue, but I think it is a beautiful choice. Kew Gardens is a statement wedding venue, think of it as an oasis in a concrete jungle. Having a wedding at Kew Gardens will be a wedding to remember!

The lovely bride got in touch with me in February for her June wedding, she came across my business through Rock My Wedding (insert link). Her email made me laugh as she called herself the “queen procrastinator”, I knew her wedding was my kind of vibe and I was delighted to provide them with a wedding cake for their summer wedding at Kew Gardens. Having a wedding in June is a gorgeous month to get married, and I can say their wedding was so lush and bright and just a beautiful joyful wedding!

The bride emailed me about a couple of different options, she mentioned that she was thinking about a semi-naked cake with edible flowers. When I have wedding consultations with my clients, the questions I love to ask are why would you like a cake like this, and oftentimes my couples prefer a simple and elegant wedding cake that complements their wedding instead of something huge and overbearing.

Designing a unique wedding cake

In our wedding cake consultation that we had over Zoom, I love to play a game this is an ice breaker and a great way to get them to think off the top of their head about what they want. From that little game, we confirmed that she wanted a simple buttercream wedding cake with colour and no cake topper. Their colour scheme was sage, blush and white, which I thought would be beautiful to create a colourful wedding cake, having a sage wedding cake would fit into the wedding so well. After each of my consultations, I sent the couple a mood board of what the cake will look like and she loved the idea of having a sage base for her wedding cake.

A sage green wedding cake was a fantastic option as she wanted to make sure there were pops of colour on the cake. Having a block colour on a wedding cake is a great option as it creates a point of interest for your guests to look at in your wedding. An all-white wedding venue and an all-white wedding cake can feel slightly repetitive and unvaried so creating a colourful wedding creates a more visually exciting wedding for both you and your guest.

Kew Gardens- Cambridge Cottage

Cambridge Cottage is perfect for a couple that prefers to have an intimate wedding but still has the awe of Kew Gardens. The Cambridge Cottages is a building just to the side of Kew. This is a fabulous place to get married as you have two separate rooms to have your wedding in, one where you can have your ceremony, the other where you can have your reception and a gorgeous lawn.

The capacity of having a wedding at Kew Gardens

  • Civil ceremony: 80

  • Dinner dance: 80

  • Standing capacity: 120

The wedding cake flavours they chose

In their initial email to me, they mentioned that they wanted a wedding cake that had either lemon or lemon drizzle, but they wanted light and fresh flavours. This works perfectly well for weddings that are held in the summer.

The couples went for:

  • Vanilla Passionfuirt

  • Lemon Elderflower

  • Vegan Raspberry ripple

Special wedding details

One special thing from the wedding was very briefly seeing the bride just before she was about to go in with her Dad and all of her bridesmaids. While I was setting up their wedding cake they had a string trio for their live music which was just incredible to listen to!
