Should you make your own wedding cake?

Are you considering embarking on the challenging task of making your own wedding cake? While it may seem like a tempting idea to showcase your culinary skills and add a personal touch to your special day, there are several factors you should carefully consider before taking on such a huge task. In this blog post, I will delve into the pros and cons of making your own wedding cake, ultimately highlighting why it is best left in the hands of professional bakers, I’d be more than happy to be in those hands.

Pros of Making Your Own Wedding Cake:

CREATIVITY AND PERSONALIZATION:

One of the primary motivations behind making your own wedding cake is the opportunity for creativity. You can infuse your personality into the design, flavours, and decorations, making it truly unique and tailored to your preferences. Your wedding cake can be adjusted to exactly how you would both like your cake to be and that is special! This would be great if you both have very specific dietary requirements that you have to pay close attention to.

The ability to put your own personal touch on your cake can be enticing for couples who are passionate about baking and who would like the challenge.

COST SAVINGS:

In certain instances, making your own wedding cake can help you save money. Professional wedding cakes can be out of some couples’ budgets, especially when factoring in intricate designs.

Cons of Making Your Own Wedding Cake:

LACK OF EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE:

Wedding cake baking is an art form that requires expertise and finesse. It takes years of practice to perfect the techniques and achieve consistent results. Without a solid foundation in baking, you may encounter numerous challenges, including uneven layers, collapsing cakes, or improper frosting techniques. We have all unfortunately seen the wedding cake horror pictures and the last thing is you want to have this happen on your big day. It is one thing to bake a single-tiered 8” sponge, but to bake a 3-tiered cake is a completely different kettle of fish. As this may not be something you do often you would also have to consider purchasing all of the equipment you will need for your wedding cake.

TIME-CONSUMING AND STRESSFUL:

Planning a wedding is already a demanding endeavour. Adding the responsibility of making your own wedding cake can be excessively time-consuming and stressful. This extra burden may compromise your ability to focus on other essential aspects of your big day, such as coordinating with vendors or spending quality time with loved ones. As cakes are perishable goods you would have to set up the cake the morning of your wedding when really you should be relaxing and getting ready for your big day!

THE RISK OF DISAPPOINTMENT:

Imagine investing countless hours and money into creating your dream wedding cake, only for it to fall short of expectations. Baking mishaps and unforeseen challenges are common, and the last thing you want is to be disappointed on your special day. Even a small mistake can significantly impact the overall outcome, potentially ruining the aesthetics and taste of the cake.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, is this something that you would embark on for your wedding? Or if you were one of the brides or grooms who may have read this and was completely put off by the idea of making your wedding cake, so get in touch, I would love to make a wedding cake for you!
